MLB trade rumors: Cubs have interest in Whit Merrifield even though Royals say they won't deal him image

The Cubs are aiming high at the trade deadline this year, or at least they aren't limiting their options.

Chicago has checked in with the Royals about All-Star Whit Merrifield, according to a report from The Athletic.

MLB.com reported a couple of weeks ago that Kansas City would have to be blown away by a package to deal Merrifield, but Chicago clearly has not being discouraged by that.

Further still, another report from MLB.com on Thursday stated the Royals are telling teams they will not sell Merrifield, who just signed a four-year, $16.25 million contract extension this offseason.

He is signed with the team through 2022 and has a club option for 2023.

But, the Cubs are seemingly that desperate for help in their lineup.

Chicago has reportedly expressed interest in Blue Jays infielder Eric Sogard, Orioles utilityman Jonathan Villar, Tigers outfielder Nicholas Castellanos and Diamondbacks speedster Jarrod Dyson.

The Cubs are 13th in MLB in runs scored, 12th in batting average and eighth in on-base percentage.

But they are last among the National League division leaders in those categories, so they could clearly use some help at the plate, especially since Kris Bryant has dealt with injuries and inconsistency over the last several years.

Merrifield would be a very good addition to the club, and while the Royals may be saying they won't trade him, a great offer of prospects from a desperate division leader for a 30-year old infielder could easily make them change their tune.
