MLB trade rumors: Braves discuss Andrelton Simmons with NL West team image

Throughout the offseason, we'll be taking a look at the top news and rumors from the Hot Stove League.

THE RUMOR: The Braves are "deep" in talks with an unidentified National League West team about a possible trade involving shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

MORE: Ten National League stars that could be dealt this season

REPORTED BY: ESPN's Jonah Keri

THE DETAILS: This proposed trade is merely speculation at this point, as it remains unclear which team is interested and what the Braves are asking in return. Simmons, 26, is a two-time Gold Glove winner who became more consistent at the plate this past season. A subsequent San Diego Union-Tribune report said the Padres had checked in on Simmons, but it's not known if they are the team in talks with the Braves.

LAST SEASON: Simmons sported a .265/.321/.338 slash line with four home runs and 44 RBIs. His offense hasn't quite caught up to his sterling defense, but he's an above-average shortstop in both respects at this stage in his career.

OUR TAKE: The Padres, Diamondbacks and Rockies are all in play here. The Dodgers have Corey Seager for the foreseeable future, so they would be less interested in making a move for Simmons. The Rockies and Diamondbacks have the most to offer, but the Padres have the biggest need at shortstop. Expect only prospects to make their way to Atlanta should a deal go through.
