The New York Yankees have a few areas to address before the MLB trade deadline arrives, one of which may be the starting rotation.
Though Gerrit Cole is just about back to his normal workload, the Yankees starting rotation has stumbled over the last month.
In 21 games since June 15, the Yankees starting rotation has the worst ERA (7.04) in MLB. Their 3.56 BB/9 is third worst and their 2.23 HR/9 ranks worst in MLB.
That's why Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes the Yankees will look to pursue a veteran starting pitcher at the trade deadline to give themselves some insurance.
"I think they’ll also need to pursue a veteran starter to protect against injury and address concerns over Luis Gil’s mounting innings. And like most teams, they’ll probably try to add a reliever too," Bowden wrote.
After beginning the season on such a high note, the regression has hit the starting rotation — and then some. Carlos Rodon's early-inning struggles are mounting while Gil has been inconsistent, bouncing looking like an All-Star at times and struggling mightily in others.
If the Yankees made a big move like adding Garrett Crochet, a decision would have to be made when it comes to his workload. Like Gil, Crochet is already well past any amount of innings mark he's seen in his career.
Maybe a reunion with Nathan Eovaldi is in order. The Yankees could also look into a potential deal for Tyler Anderson of the Los Angeles Angels.
It's more likely the Yankees look to make low-key moves at the deadline instead of going after a big fish, but it would behoove the front office to at least take a look at some potential depth for the starting rotation.
