Each night in the 2016 baseball season, we'll run down the top news, facts and highlights from action around Major League Baseball.

Giants closer Santiago Casilla had an inning to forget Saturday in San Diego.

In the bottom of the 10th against the Padres, Casilla had already blown a one-run lead and had runners at the corners with nobody out as the Padres appeared ready to take the second straight game of the series. Instead it was Casilla giving the Padres a 7-6 win with an embarrassing mistake.

Casilla’s lead foot appeared to get caught in the dirt as he pushed toward the plate, resulting in a balk that allowed the game-winning run to score from third. It's the fifth blown save for Casilla this season.

Player of the day

Matt Shoemaker, Angels: For the third consecutive game, the White Sox were shut out, this time by the arm of Shoemaker, who fired a complete-game shutout with 13 strikeouts in a 1-0 win. James Shields took the loss for Chicago despite throwing a complete game himself, but one run was all it took.

Highlight

Miami's Giancarlo Stanton may be known as a power hitter, but the outfielder showed off his range and laid out to make an inning-ending diving catch in right field to rob Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams.

Three things to know

— With seven innings of one-run ball against the Rays in a 2-1 win, Orioles starter Chris Tillman (13-2) became the fifth pitcher in franchise history to win 13 of his first 15 decisions.

— Clayton Kershaw could return to the Dodgers' rotation as soon as Thursday if the ace reports no setbacks from the 60-pitch simulated game he threw Saturday.

— Hoping to return this month, Giants outfielder Hunter Pence re-injured his hamstring in a rehab game with Triple-A Sacramento. Pence, who hasn't played since June 1, had to be helped off the field by a team trainer.

What's next

Rangers (54-38) at Cubs (55-35), 2:20 p.m. ET: Cole Hamels (9-2, 3.21 ERA) takes the mound for the Rangers as Texas looks to avoid a three-game sweep by the NL Central leaders. Hamels, who was 4-0 with a 1.51 ERA in June, has struggled in two starts in July (10.80 ERA). The Rangers have lost six of seven, but the last time Hamels pitched at Wrigley Field, he threw a no-hitter for the Phillies last July. John Lackey (7-5, 3.70 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Cubs.

Blue Jays (51-42) at Athletics (40-51), 4:05 p.m. ET: A pair of southpaws face off as the A’s send Rich Hill (9-3, 2.25 ERA) to the mound to finish off a sweep against J.A. Happ (12-3, 3.36 ERA) and the Jays. Hill, who is likely to get dealt at the trade deadline, is 6-0 with a 2.05 ERA over his past seven starts.
