Each night in the 2016 baseball season, we'll run down the top news, facts and highlights from action around Major League Baseball.

Brandon Crawford was a hitting machine Monday night.

The Giants shortstop tied a major league record with seven hits and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the 14th inning in an 8-7 victory over the Marlins.

Crawford was 7 for 8 on the night with five singles, a double, triple, run scored and two RBIs. The only other National League player to get seven hits in a game in the modern era was Pittsburgh's Rennie Stennett in 1975.

Crawford even added a stolen base for good measure.

The Marlins tagged Giants starter Johnny Cueto early Monday evening, but the Giants rallied with a five-run seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead. Christian Yelich returned the lead to the Marlins with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh. Crawford then tied it up on a single to drive in Denard Span in the eighth inning.

Crawford had scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh after the first pitch from reliever Brian Ellington was thrown high and out of the reach of Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto.

The Marlins held a 5-1 lead after five innings thanks to back-to-back homers from Martin Prado and Yelich to chase Cueto. Yelich also turned in a stellar performance, going 3 for 6 with a double, home run and four RBIs.

Elsewhere, the Cardinals also had a five-run inning, with a handful of runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally past the Reds for a 5-4 victory. The winning run came when Reds reliever Ross Ohlendorf plunked Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina with the bases loaded.

Before the Giants and Marlins went to extras, the Braves got a 4-3 win over the Brewers when Matt Kemp scored from third after Brewers center fielder Keon Broxton dropped Gordon Beckham's sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th.

Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning to get his ninth save of the year.

Player of the day

Devon Travis, 2B, Blue Jays —  Travis went 4 for 5 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored in Toronto's 7-5 win over the visiting Rays. The four-hit day helped Travis increase his batting average from .293 to .304. Not to be overlooked was Travis' teammate, Edwin Encarnacion, who was 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs.

Highlight:

Giants catcher Buster Posey will probably rethink sliding head first in the future after eating it at third base following a Crawford single in the 11th inning. Thankfully for the Giants, Posey was able to stay in the game, though he did have a noticeable scrape on his chin.

Three things to know:

— Giants manager Bruce Bochy missed his team's win over the Marlins because of an illness that required hospitalization Monday morning. Bochy was kept overnight for observation, but is expected to be back in the dugout for Tuesday's game in Miami.

— Houston gave second baseman Jose Altuve a day off Monday, snapping his streak of 202 consecutive games played. Altuve was ejected in the seventh inning of Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Rangers. Houston has lost six of seven after Monday's 3-1 loss to the Twins. Angels center fielder Mike Trout now has the longest active streak of games played.

— Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre went 2 for 3 with a solo homer in the Rangers' 4-3 win over the Rockies. Beltre has 790 career multi-hit games and 2,880 hits to tie him with Hall of Famer Frankie Frisch for 40th all time. The Rangers scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning for their fifth win this season when trailing in the ninth. It was also their MLB-best 34th come-from-behind victory.

What's next:

Rangers (66-47) at Rockies (55-57) 3:10 p.m. ET — After the Rangers took the first of a four-game series at Coors Field, Colorado will send Tyler Chatwood (10-7, 3.63 ERA) to the mound while A.J. Griffin (5-1, 4.05) will get the start for the Rangers.

Tigers (61-51) at Mariners (58-53) 10:10 p.m. ET — Both teams will start 1-0 pitchers Monday with Detroit's Daniel Norris (1-0, 4.85) coming back from an oblique injury to make his fourth start. Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 4.31) will make his sixth start of the year for Seattle.
