Baseball today: Key rivalries renewed as new series open image

Baseball's opening week is through its first series. With matinees, Friday brings a fresh start to the 2014 season. Start with Braves at Nationals, and then tune to the renewal of the Dodgers-Giants rivalry.

Track all games live on SN's MLB scoreboard.

Atlanta Braves (2-1) at Washington Nationals (3-0), 1:05 p.m. ET

Half of each team's first 12 games come against the other, beginning with Washington's home opener. Two major problems for the Nationals a year ago were a poor start and an inability to beat the Braves, who won the clubs' season series 13-6. After their three-game series this weekend, the teams play three more at Atlanta a week later. But then they won't face off again until June.

San Francisco Giants (3-1) at Los Angeles Dodgers (4-1), 4:10 p.m. ET

After opening the season in Australia and San Diego, the Dodgers are finally coming home. Hyun-jin Ryu will make his third start in five games. He replaces scheduled starter Clayton Kershaw, who's on the disabled list for the first time in his career and is likely to be sidelined for a month or longer. Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp is expected to make his season debut after rehabbing from left ankle and shoulder operations.

St. Louis Cardinals (2-1) at Pittsburgh Pirates (2-1), 7:05 p.m. ET

Shelby Miller and Gerrit Cole made strong debuts last season with the Cardinals and Pirates, respectively. They are the starters for tonight's first meeting of the NL Central's best teams. The Cardinals are defending National League champions but had difficulty with the Pirates last season, splitting the series. The Bucs were 8-4 at home.
