The southpaw allowed just four hits and struck out 10 over six scoreless innings, and Chicago's bullpen closed the door for a major league-leading fifth team shutout — the franchise's most after 22 games since 1973. The 4-0 victory not only marked the franchise's first sweep in Toronto since 2005, but it was also the first time the Blue Jays had been swept at home since 2013.

Player of the day

Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Red Sox: Pedroia enjoyed Boston's fourth consecutive win in a big way, hammering two homers, including a grand slam, in a 3-for-4 performance against the Braves.

Highlight

Rays outfielder Steven Souza Jr. did his best Kevin Kiermaier impression by chasing down a Chris Davis line drive to the warning track and making a ridiculous diving catch.

Three things to know

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz had three extra-base hits against the Braves. He passed Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx on the all-time list and tied George Brett for 19th-most.

— Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski collected his 2,000th career hit, becoming the first catcher to reach the plateau since Ivan Rodriguez. Pierzynski is the 10th catcher to reach the mark. Johnny Bench (2,048) is next on the hits list among catchers.

— Alex Rodriguez became the only active player with at least 100 homers in two stadiums when he went deep Wednesday night at Texas. He hit 124 at old Yankee Stadium and now has 100 at Globe Life Park in Arlington.
