The Astros and Yankees are set to battle in a showdown of baseball's present and future, and Sporting News has ALCS Game 1 results.
Everything for the Yankees could have gone right tonight: They kept the game within reach, the offense made Keuchel work a little bit and the pinstripes got to the Houston bullpen with nine outs left.
But the Astros' pitching, from Dallas Keuchel to Chris Devenski to Ken Giles, completely stifled the Yankee bats. Keuchel went off today for 10 Ks in six innings, becoming the third Astros pitcher in franchise history to reach the 10 K mark in a playoff game.
The Astros staff kept the Yanks in check. In fact, it wasn't until the ninth that the Yankees would have a man cross the plate, as Greg Bird mashed a mammoth home run to score the Bombers' sole run.
Houston did everything it wanted to do, too: They gutted out a tough victory and scratched across some runs on the the Yankees' hottest pitcher in Masahiro Tanaka. Both teams have positives to take away from the first game in what should be a great series, but in the end, Houston launches ahead with a Game 1 victory.
Saturday's Game 2 should be telling, as Luis Severino and Justin Verlander square off in a marquee matchup, and what could be the turning point of the series.
