Sometimes professors teach students more than just what's on the syllabus.

Case in point: Cubs fan and University of Illinois student Ben Larson was facing a tough situation. His team is playing the Pirates on Thursday in Pittsburgh in the one-game NL wild-card game, but he also is supposed to take a midterm the same day.

His tactic was that honesty about his situation (he has tickets) and the reality of the Cubs' history (well, you know) was the best policy. His professor agreed, allowing him to reschedule the exam.

Even if the good professor doesn't teach history, it's clear he understands it — and that some things in life are more important than the timing of midterm exams.
