Each night we'll provide you with the nine top story lines from the day's action, beginning with the stars of the day, and look ahead to the next day's matchups.

Mark Teixeira has become a man among boys.

MORE: Deadline winners and losers | Big August deals still possible

The Yankees slugger almost single-handedly defeated the White Sox on Friday night, going 3 for 4 with two home runs, six RBIs and two walks, giving him back-to-back three-hit, two-home-run games. He now has seven multi-hit games in his last 11 outings. He also set an MLB record by becoming the first player to hit home runs from both sides of the plate 14 times in his career.

Teixeira wasn't the only Yankees hitter to go off, though, as New York pounded out 18 hits in the 13-6 victory. Carlos Beltran went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI as he continues to surprise at age 38.

With the Blue Jays recently adding several talented players to its already formidable lineup, the Yankees will have to keep winning if they hope to maintain the AL East lead.

Here are more highlights from Friday's games:

Impact players

C — Welington Castillo, Diamondbacks: Castillo went 3 for 5 with three runs scored and a solo home run in Arizona's extra-innings win against the Astros.

1B — Ryan Howard, Phillies: Howard went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, four RBIs and two walks in yet another Philadelphia win.

2B — Ian Kinsler, Tigers; Jedd Gyorko, Padres: Kinsler concluded his hot July hitting with a 4-for-5 effort. Gyorko went 3 for 4 with three RBIs in an extra-innings win against the Marlins.

SS — Wilmer Flores, Mets: The Mets should pat themselves on the back for not trading this guy. Two days after shedding tears upon learning he was about to be traded to Milwaukee, Flores hit a walkoff home run in the 12th inning against the Nationals.

3B — Josh Donaldson, Blue Jays: The late-game hero struck again. Donaldson singled in the 11th against the Royals for his third walkoff hit of the season. He went 3 for 5 in the game with a run scored, a walk and four RBIs.

OF — Adam Jones, Orioles: Jones went 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs in Baltimore's come-from-behind win against the Tigers.

DH — Nelson Cruz, Mariners: Cruz went 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs in an impressive win against the Twins.

SP — Taijuan Walker, Mariners: Walker pitched a one-hitter against the Twins, with the only hit being a solo shot by Miguel Sano. He struck out 11 and walked one in the 101-pitch gem.

Trade deadline roundup

— The Mets acquired outfielder Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers for pitching prospects Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa.

— The Cubs acquired right-handed starter Dan Haren from the Marlins for two minor league prospects, shortstop Elliot Soto and right-hander Ivan Pineyro. Haren, a three-time All-Star, has a 3.42 ERA this year and fills a gap in the rotation as the Cubs fight for a playoff spot.

— The Orioles acquired outfielder Gerardo Parra from the Brewers for pitching prospect Zach Davies. Parra is hitting .328/.369/.517 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs this year.

— The Pirates bolstered their rotation by acquiring left-hander J.A. Happ (4.64 ERA, 1.408 WHIP) from the Mariners for minor league hurler Adrian Sampson. The Bucs also sent outfielder Jose Tabata to the Dodgers in exchange for first baseman Michael Morse, who had been acquired by LA from the Marlins about 24 hours earlier.

— The Brewers sent struggling reliever Jonathan Broxton to the Cardinals for minor league outfielder Malik Collymore. The Brewers also reportedly included cash in the deal to help cover the remainder of Broxton's $9 million salary for this season and a $2 million buyout in 2016. Broxton, a two-time All-Star, has a 5.89 ERA and 1.389 WHIP this year.

The Cubs acquired relief pitcher Tommy Hunter in exchange for outfielder Junior Lake.

Key injuries

Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw was scratched from his scheduled start Friday because of a hip issue. Zack Greinke took his place. Kershaw expects to pitch Saturday.

Surprise performers

Good: Tigers first baseman Jefry Marte hasn't found a ton of success while helping to fill in for the injured Miguel Cabrera, but that didn't stop him from breaking out against the Orioles. He finished 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in a losing effort.

Bad: Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner was waxed by the Rangers on Friday. He gave up six earned runs on nine hits in seven innings.
