Throughout the offseason, we'll be taking a look at the top news and rumors from the Hot Stove League.

RUMOR: The Mets and Braves are interested in signing Yoenis Cespedes to a short-term contract, but the slugger is seeking a long-term pact.

REPORTED BY: Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal and MLB.com's Mark Bowman.

DETAILS: After Cespedes saved the Mets' season, leading them all the way to the World Series, it appears New York is only willing to give the Cuban slugger a one-year deal.

Enter a mystery team: the Braves. Atlanta has made a number of interesting moves the past two offseasons, largely weakening their current team for a more promising future. But it's believed the Braves are interested in signing Cespedes and trading recently acquired outfielder Ender Inciarte for prospects.

LAST SEASON: Cespedes carried a .291/.328/.542 slash line into the postseason with 35 home runs and 105 RBIs. He hit 22 home runs and drove in 54 runs after the All-Star break.

OUR TAKE: Cespedes should already be back with the Mets. Without him, their best hitter is an oft-injured David Wright, and he's surrounded by inconsistent bats and overachievers. Not only has Cespedes proven himself in New York, he has proven himself throughout the majors an all-around player. Cespedes to the Braves makes very little sense.
