MLB free agents 2016: Mets reportedly 'very interested' in Ben Zobrist image

The Mets have reportedly turned their attention to signing free agent second baseman Ben Zobrist this offseason, less than month after watching him help life the Royals to the World Series.

According to the New York Times report, there are at least 10 teams interested in Zobrist's signature, as he seeks a four-year deal with a contender.

Zobrist, 34, would likely start at second base for the Mets, replacing Daniel Murphy. It's believed Zobrist could also see some time at third base, spelling David Wright from time to time.

The Mets were close to acquring Zobrist before the July 31 trade deadline, but were unwilling to meet Oakland's demands.

Zobrist instead wound up in Kansas City, where he helped the Royals take down the Mets 4-1 in the World Series. He hit .276/.359/.450 this season and had played at least 145 games in six straight seasons prior to 2015.
