The Twins placed top prospect Byron Buxton on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a sprained left thumb, MLB.com reported.

Buxton, 21, injured the thumb sliding into second base on a steal attempt Tuesday. He played Wednesday, but struck out in all four of his at-bats, and the Twins decided to take a cautious approach with the talented outfielder, who was just called up June 13 from Double-A Chattanooga.

It hasn't been the smoothest transition for Buxton thus far; he's hitting .189/.231/.270 with no home runs and one stolen base in 11 games.

The Twins recalled shortstop Danny Santana to take Buxton's roster spot. Santana was batting just .218/.235/.291 with no home runs and 11 RBIs before he was sent down to Triple-A Rochester in early June.
