The New York Yankees made their first splash ahead of the MLB trade deadline by acquiring Miami Marlins star Jazz Chisholm.
They sent three prospects, including catcher Agustin Ramirez, in the deal to acquire Chisholm. It's still unclear where he will play for the most part once he arrives on the team.
With the trade official, Bradford Doolittle and David Schoenfield of ESPN gave the Yankees a favorable B+ grade for the trade.
Chisholm hasn't found his form since being an All-Star in 2022, but he's been a league-average player for the Marlins in the two years since.
He immediately becomes the best option at the leadoff spot even though his numbers from that spot are around league average as well. He's also put together his best strikeout and walk rates of his career thus far.
Chisholm's pull-happy approach should play much better in Yankee Stadium. Though he has 13 home runs on the season, Statcast's adjustments say he would have 19 on the season if all of them came at Yankee Stadium.
Theoretically, Chisholm should find better pitches to hit in front of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, but he should be a welcome sight at the leadoff spot regardless.
It isn't clear what position Chisholm will play, but this move seems to be a decent one for a Yankees team that needs to find a hot streak in the final two months of the season.
