The Texas Rangers endured a disappointing 2024 season after winning the World Series in 2023. The team finished the year with a 78-84 record and missed the postseason.
This coming offseason, they are going to have some work to do in order to bounce back into contention in 2025. Their starting rotation is going to have some holes thanks to Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney hitting the open market.
They could potentially take a look at New York Mets starter Luis Severino, who Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report lists as the sixth best free agent starter this offseason.
"It's not hard to imagine someone giving Severino a three-year deal," Rymer wrote. "And the more one thinks about it, the more one wonders if that might even be too conservative."
Severino has certainly earned the chance to sign a multi-year deal this offseason. He bounced back in a big way with the Mets and has been able to stay healthy.
In 31 starts, he posted a 3.91 ERA, striking out 161 batters over 182 innings of work. He certainly isn't an ace, but he could very easily profile as a No. 2 or No. 3 type starter with Texas.
They'll need starting pitching, and Severino, while he won't come cheap, shouldn't be overly expensive for a team that has been affected by the Bally Sports situation.
His market will be fascinating to follow, and it will be interesting to see if Texas is one of the teams that decides to pursue him.
