After leaving Monday's 5-3 win over the Reds with discomfort in his shoulder, Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right rotator cuff, the team announced.

The catcher felt uncomfortable while dealing with Cincinnati's five stolen bases. He was in noticeable pain during a sixth-inning at-bat, then left the game for good in the eighth.

"He's got a bad shoulder from throwing," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "That's what we're concerned about. Anytime you talk about a shoulder problem with a catcher, that's a problem."

Kevin Plawecki, who is batting .176 with two RBI this season, will start at catcher during d'Arnaud's absence. Rene Rivera was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to back him up.

D'Arnaud was struggling at the plate this season before the injury, batting just .196 with no home runs and just one RBI. Injuries are no stranger to d'Arnaud. He has never played more than 108 games in a season.
