The New York Mets are falling out of postseason contention but have performed surprisingly well considering the expectations for the team heading into the 2024 season.
After losing 87 games in 2023, New York was not expected to contend, yet here they are in the thick of the playoff race.
This offseason, they may be prepared to spend big. They've already been linked to Baltimore Orioles slugger Anthony Santander by Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report, who stated that the Mets would "make sense" as a suitor.
The 29-year-old slugger is hitting just .236 on the season. However, he has hit 38 home runs, driven in 86 runs, and posted an .819 OPS. Kelly even projected that he could land a deal similar to the five years and $100 million the Philadelphia Phillies gave Nick Castellanos in 2022.
The Mets could certainly use a power bat in their lineup, especially if they are unable to keep Pete Alonso and J.D. Martinez. Santander is a proven middle-of-the-order hitter that could provide a major spark for New York as they try to contend for years to come.
New York could significantly increase their payroll this winter and push the chips for 2025 and beyond by making a move such as this to strengthen their roster. This could also make up for the potential losses of Martinez and Alonso.
It will be interesting to see how his market develops and if the Mets are ultimately in on him this winter.
