The New York Mets have emerged as a surprise contender this season.
After going 75-87 in 2023 and getting rid of some key pieces, they find themselves right in the mix for the third National League Wild Card spot.
At 64-60, New York is just two games back of the final spot and could make a run to snatch it from the Atlanta Braves down the stretch.
But in the offseason, they might have the opportunity to build a true World Series contender, as a former Cy Young winner will be available.
"Blake Snell won the NL Cy Young Award last year but didn't land the long-term contract he wanted in free agency because of the injuries he's had during his career and because he was never allowed to pitch deep into games," Jim Bowden wrote in The Athletic. "He'll get that long-term contract this offseason."
Snell is likely to finally receive a long-term contract this winter, and the Mets might be the perfect fit for him. They'll have Kodai Senga back next year, but having a second top-level arm in the mix would give New York a great chance to contend again.
The 31-year-old has spent the season with the San Francisco Giants, and after a bad start to the season, he has lowered his ERA to 3.67. He has also struck out 101 batters in his 14 starts.
Snell brings great postseason experience with him and a veteran presence, which could greatly benefit a young Mets team looking to take a step forward in 2025.
In his last seven starts, the left-hander is 2-0 and owns a 1.14 ERA. That stretch also includes his no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds.
He'll be one of the most sought-after pitchers this offseason, and he will likely sign much sooner than he did the previous offseason. We'll see if New York takes a chance on him.
