Each night in the 2016 baseball season, we'll run down the top news, facts and highlights from action around Major League Baseball.

A cross-Chicago victory for the White Sox featured an unlikely hero Monday. Batting last in the lineup against the Cubs, second-year player Tyler Saladino connected on a pitch from the recently acquired Mike Montgomery to drive in J.B. Shuck as the White Sox recorded their third straight walk-off win for the first time since 1962.

The Sox entered the eighth inning with a two-run lead, but reliever Matt Albers allowed three hits and two runs to spoil the start from Miguel Gonzalez, who outpitched Cubs ace Jake Arrieta.

Aside from the walk-off hit from Saladino, the play of the game came in the first inning when White Sox outfielder Melky Cabrera ranged back to the wall in left field and leaped to rob the Cubs' Kris Bryant of a solo home run.

Player of the day

Albert Pujols, Angels — Recording four RBIs in the Angels' 6-2 win over the Royals, Pujols connected on three singles to push his slash line to .254/.329/.438 this season.

Highlight

Adrian Beltre's second home run of the night against the Athletics was in walk-off style as the Rangers veteran cranked a 409-foot bomb to left field.

Three things to know

— The Cubs acquired closer Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in exchange for touted prospect shortstop Gleyber Torres, right-hander Adam Warren and minor league outfielders Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford.

— In a 4-2 win over the Padres, Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez, who is second in the AL in ERA (2.72), has now gone 16 straight starts without a loss, tied for the fourth-longest streak in Blue Jays history. Despite the loss, Alex Dickerson blasted a homer into the top deck at Roger's Centre, extending the Padres' home run streak to 23 games, tied for sixth longest streak of all time.

— The MLB debuts of the Astros' Alex Bregman and the Rockies' David Dahl didn't go as planned as the two combined to go 1 for 8 with four strikeouts.

What's next

Cardinals (52-46) at Mets (52-45), 4:10 p.m. ET: After a Monday rainout, Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader will feature the Mets' Noah Syndergaard (9-4, 2.43 ERA) and the Red Birds' Carlos Martinez (9-6, 2.83 ERA) as the clubs lead off a playoff-esque series. Both teams are in need of a win as they try to gain ground on their respective division leaders.

Mariners (50-48) at Pirates (51-47), 7:05 p.m. ET: Looking to stay in the wild-card hunt, the Mariners send Felix Hernandez (4-4, 3.23 ERA) to the mound hoping for a rebound performance. King Felix allowed five runs over 6 2/3 innings in his last start after missing nearly two months with a calf injury. Francisco Liriano (6-9, 4.96 ERA) toes the rubber for the Bucs coming off a 13-strikeout performance his last time out.
