In the wake of Hunter Pence's latest trip to the disabled list, the Giants reinforced their bruised and battered outfield ranks Thursday in a trade with the Reds for veteran Marlon Byrd.

San Francisco sent Double-A right-handed pitcher Stephen Johnson to Cincinnati in exchange.

Byrd, who turns 38 at the end of the month, was hitting .237/.286/.448 in 388 plate appearances with the Reds this season. He had 19 home runs and 43 RBIs.

Since Pence went down with a strained left oblique on Monday, the Giants have fielded a makeshift outfield assortment consisting of Justin Maxwell, Ryan Lollis, Juan Perez and Gregor Blanco and Brandon Belt. They've also been without starters Nori Aoki (concussion) and Angel Pagan (knee).

Aoki was activated Thursday in line with Pence's disabled list trip.
