The Cincinnati Reds made headlines on Sunday night when they fired their manager David Bell after falling short of the postseason.
Cincinnati is 76-81 and in fourth place in the National League Central. Bench coach Freddie Benavides has taken over as the interim manager for the remainder of the season.
But the search is already on for a new skipper. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker is on their radar.
Schumaker managed the Marlins to the postseason last year and earned NL Manager of the Year honors. However, 2024 has gone sideways for his club and the Marlins decided to decline his club option for 2025.
The 44-year-old skipper actually played the final two seasons of his career with the Reds. He spent most of his playing career with the St. Louis Cardinals.
But he has had success as a coach and as a manager. He served as the San Diego Padres' bench coach for several years before ultimately taking the job in St. Louis and later moving onto Miami to manage.
Schumaker won two World Series rings with St. Louis as a player, so he has experience in winning environments. If hired by the Reds, he could help the team finally take the next step with their young stars.
It will be interesting to see where Schumaker ends up. Cincinnati could be the perfect landing spot for him as he tries to rebound from a tough season at the helm of the Marlins.
