While the Yankees begin a three-game set with the Red Sox on Monday, ailing first baseman Mark Teixeira will head to New York for further evaluation on his injured right shin.

"We're not happy with where he's at,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, via the New York Daily News. “Just trying to get him healthy."

For nearly two weeks, Teixeira has been dealing with a deep bone bruise that has limited his availability; he hasn't played a full game since Aug. 16. Even then, if Teixeira puts the ball in play, he lumbers around the bases in obvious pain.

“I have a lot of inflammation surrounding the bone,” Teixeira said over the weekend after meeting with an Atlanta Braves team doctor, via NJ.com. “That's what's causing all the pain in my soft tissue, the nerves, the ligaments and everything. It's what's not allowing me to run.”

Rookie Greg Bird has stepped in at first base and performed well. In 51 at-bats, Bird is hitting .255/.412/.339 with two homers and 10 RBIs.
