After serving as president and CEO of the Red Sox for more than a decade, Larry Lucchino is stepping down at the end of the season, the Boston Globe reported Saturday.

“I’ll be 70 in September. That’s sort of why I’m ready to step back,’’ Lucchino said.

According to the Boston Herald, executive vice president and COO Sam Kennedy will take over for Lucchino when his contract expires at the end of the season. The move is expected to be announced this week.

“We are hopeful and confident that we will conclude an agreement with Larry going forward where he will continue to be an integral part of upper management,” Red Sox chairman Tom Werner told the Herald. “He will have less of an everyday role but he will continue to have an important strategic role not just with the Red Sox but also within Major League Baseball.”

Lucchino has been president and CEO of the Red Sox since February 2002, and in 2004, the team won its first World Series since 1918. The Red Sox added world championships in 2007 and 2013. Lucchino, a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor, previously served as president and CEO of the Orioles and Padres.
