It can indeed get worse for the Red Sox.

Closer Koji Uehara is out for the season after suffering a broken bone in his wrist when he was hit by a line drive, the team announced Monday.

Uehara got drilled Friday night by an Ian Kinsler liner but was able to knock the ball down and throw to first for the final out of the game. That locked up his 25th save, but he won't have a chance to chalk up another one until 2016.

X-rays taken Friday night came back negative, but the pitcher was sent back to Boston on Sunday for further tests, which revealed the fracture. The 40-year-old will finish his season at 2-4 with a 2.23 ERA and 0.917 WHIP in 43 appearances.

Boston manager John Farrell told reporters Sunday that recent waiver claim Jean Machi could get the ball in the ninth inning in the meantime. Junichi Tazawa is another option.

The Red Sox are off Monday and open a series against the Marlins on Tuesday in Miami.
