A Miami Marlins prospect is sidelined indefinitely after the franchise's top draft pick from last year cut him with a knife.

Stone Garrett, the Marlins' minor league player of the year last season, was being flown to Miami to be evaluated by a hand specialist after being cut on the thumb by teammate Josh Naylor in an incident team officials are describing as a prank gone bad.

Michael Hill, the Marlins' president of baseball operations, told the Sun Sentinel that Garrett needed three stitches in his thumb.

"Naylor has a reputation of being a bit of a prankster, but this one obviously went a little too far," Hill said. "Obviously, he's torn up about it. This is a good friend, his roommate. They came into pro ball together, so they're good friends.

"Hopefully it'll just be a short term and [Garrett] can get back healthy and return to form and continue on his career."

Heading into this season, Baseball America ranked Naylor, an 18-year-old first baseman, the Marlins' No. 2 prospect and Garrett, a 20-year-old outfielder, No. 4. The two are playing for Single-A Greensboro (N.C.).

"I don't think you'll see Josh Naylor goofing around with knives anymore," Hill said. "Other pranks were just pranks and nobody got hurt. Unfortunately, this one ended in an injury, which isn't funny at all."
