Marlins star Jose Fernandez dies in boating accident image

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning. He was 24 years old.

"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.

The Marlins have cancelled today's scheduled game against the Braves.

Fernandez was a two-time All-Star who won the 2016 National League Rookie of the Year award. His final career statistics will be 38-17 with a 2.58 ERA and 589 strikeouts. Earlier this season, Sporting News ranked Fernandez as the 36th best player in baseball.

A native of Cuba, Fernandez graduated from Braulio Alonso HS (Tampa, FL). The Marlins made him a first-round pick (14the overall) in 2011.
