Jonathan Papelbon isn't going away quietly just yet.

Major League Baseball announced Friday that the Nationals reliever has been suspended for three games for "intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area" of Manny Machado on Wednesday.

But Papelbon will appeal, keeping him active for the Nats as they open a three-game weekend series with none other than the Phillies, the team Papelbon lobbied so hard to escape earlier this year.

It would be a surprise to see MLB back down on its discipline, which also includes an undisclosed fine, considering the circumstances of the incident.

Papelbon hit Machado in the shoulder with two outs in the ninth inning Wednesday, two innings after the Orioles star hit a go-ahead home run off Washington starter Max Scherzer.
