One day after an apparent false start, Johnny Cueto is indeed headed to Kansas City.

Fox Sports first reported Sunday morning that the Reds ace has been traded to the Royals.

TRADE RUMORS: Cole Hamels | Jonathan Papelbon | Justin Upton

Yahoo Sports reported that left-hander Brandon Finnegan has been discussed as a possible piece of the deal. He was the Royals' first-round draft pick last season.

The trade was close enough Saturday that Cincinnati had Michael Lorenzen warming and ready to make Cueto's scheduled start. But when it didn't go down, the All-Star took the mound and turned out eight scoreless innings against the Rockies.

The 29-year-old right-hander has spent his entire career in the Reds organization and has been stellar again this season after finishing as the runner-up to Clayton Kershaw in last year's NL Cy Young Award voting.

Cueto currently is 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 19 starts, with 29 walks and 120 strikeouts in 130 2/3 innings.
