Joey Votto gets two-game suspension for tirade toward ump image

Joey Votto has received a two-game suspension for his incident with umpire Bill Welke on Wednesday.

According to Major League Baseball, the Reds first baseman will appeal the suspension and will continue to play until the appeal is heard.

The ban stems from a tirade Votto had during in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

Angry about a called strike, Votto confronted Welke. Votto then pointed toward the Reds dugout to plead, "I had asked for time." The backtalk upset Welke, who tossed Votto.

Upset with the ejection, Votto threw his helmet in disgust. He then got in Welke's face, screaming profanities at close range before being held back by umpire Laz Diaz, third base coach Jim Riggleman and manager Bryan Price, who was also ejected.
