The Indians on Monday placed second baseman Jason Kipnis on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with inflammation in his right shoulder. He's expected to miss two to three weeks.

The injury kept Kipnis out of the lineup Sunday after he had an MRI exam in the morning. The team was hopeful Kipnis could avoid a DL stint, but the pain was too severe when he attempted to throw.

Kipnis heads to the DL for the second time in as many years. The former All-Star is having a tremendous year, as he leads the AL with 132 hits and 31 doubles. He's batting .326 with six triples, six homers and 39 RBIs in 101 games for the struggling Indians.

The Indians recalled infielder Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Columbus to take Kipnis' spot on the roster. Ramirez, 22, began the year as the Tribe's starting shortstop but was sent to the minors in June and July. He is batting .176/.243/.235 in 47 games.
