Jac Caglianone stats 2023: Florida's two-way star takes historic numbers into College World Series image

If Florida is going to win its first College World Series since 2017, first baseman Jac Caglianone is almost certainly going to be a huge part of it.

Caglianone has emerged as one of college baseball's brightest stars in his sophomore season, mashing his way to Florida's single-season home run record. He's positioned himself as a future candidate for the top pick in the MLB Draft, though Florida will be able to hold onto Caglianone for at least one more year.

Hitting isn't all Caglianone can do. He's also made 16 starts for the Gators on the mound, positioning himself as a premier MLB prospect while giving Florida fans hope that the program can bring home its second national championship.

As the Gators take the field in Omaha, here's a look at the numbers from Caglianone's outstanding season.

Jac Caglianone stats 2023

Caglianone has made a major impact as both a hitter and a pitcher this season. Here are the numbers you need to know.

Jac Caliganone hitting stats

Games AVG HR RBI OBP OPS
65 .336 31 84 .402 1.168

Caglianone has been a monster at the plate this season, entering the College World Series as the NCAA's home run leader with 31. While he hasn't gotten on base as much as some other stars thanks to a low walk rate, Caglianone's power still forces pitchers to stay careful when navigating Florida's lineup.

Caglianone hit seven home runs with an .887 OPS across 28 games as a freshman in 2022.

Innings ERA WHIP BB K
69 3.78  1.38  49 81

Not many of college baseball's best power hitters can also serve as a full-time starting pitcher, but Caglianone has done just that.

The left-hander hasn't been dominant, falling victim to some control issues with with more than six walks allowed per nine innings, but his 3.78 ERA across 69 innings has been serviceable for a Gators team that already benefits from his powerful bat.

NCAA home run leaders 2023

Caglianone enters the College World Series as college baseball's home run leader with 31 on the season. Only Charlotte's Cam Fisher and Wake Forest's Brock Wilken have also hit the 30-home run mark.

Here is a look at the complete NCAA home run leaderboard heading into the College World Series.

Player HR School
Jac Caglianone 31 Florida
Cam Fisher 30 Charlotte
Brock Wilken 30 Wake Forest
Shane Lewis 27 Troy
Gavin Kash 26 Texas Tech
Nick Lorusso 26 Maryland
Charlie Condon 25 Georgia
Edrick Felix 25 FGCU
Colby Shelton 25 Alabama
Grayson Tatrow 25 Abilene Christian

Caglianone will have to fight to maintain his spot atop the home run leaderboard in Omaha, as Wilken and the Demon Deacons are also hoping to make a title run.

There is also a chance at a small piece of history for Caglianone during the College World Series. Two more home runs would tie him for 10th on the all-time single-season home run leaderboard. While the record of 48 home runs by Oklahoma State's Pete Incaviglia is out of reach, 33 would be enough to move Caglianone into the top 10, and 34 would tie Caglianone for ninth in a single season.

Jac Caglianone MLB Draft

Caglianone isn't eligible for the 2023 MLB Draft because he is still just a sophomore at Florida. If players don't sign with a team out of high school and attend a four-year college, they must wait three years before entering the draft again. Caglianone is expected to be one of the top prospects available in the 2024 draft.

The Athletic's Keith Law called Caglianone a potential No. 1 pick earlier in the season, and all the lefty has done in the last three months is prove why he's worth an early pick next year.

Whether teams will view Caglianone as a legitimate two-way player will be one storyline to watch. Shohei Ohtani has made it look easy, but former No. 3 overall pick Brendan McKay is one example of how difficult it is to play both roles.
