Ichiro Suzuki ties Ty Cobb's all-time hit total … sort of image

With one swing of the bat Friday night, Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki placed his name alongside baseball immortal Ty Cobb on the sport's career hit list.

OK, now for the asterisk: Suzuki's 4,191st career hit includes 2,913 hits in Major League Baseball, and 1,278 hits in Japan, where he began his career before joining the Mariners and taking the baseball world by storm in 2001.

Still, it was a special moment for Suzuki.

Cobb, of course, collected all of his 4,191 career hits in a 24-year major league career with the Tigers and Athletics. He held the all-time MLB hit mark until surpassed by Pete Rose, who finished his career in 1986 with 4,256 hits.

Suzuki was unavailable for comment after the game, but Marlins officials and players were quick to acknowledge the milestone.

"A special night for Ichiro to tie Ty Cobb," Marlins manager Dan Jennings told reporters. "He's a Hall of Famer, plain and simple.

"Forever people have been talking about Pete Rose and Ty Cobb and now Ichiro Suzuki will be mentioned in that same breath. And he still has a ways to go."

"Tying Ty Cobb, that just goes to show you what kind of career Ichiro has had," Marlins center fielder Cole Gillespie told the Miami Herald.

Suzuki's fifth-inning single moved him one step closer to a legitimate MLB milestone: 3,000 hits. Suzuki, 41, is currently under a one-year, $2 million deal with the Marlins, after coming over from the Yankees in the offseason. Signed to provide depth in the outfield and as a pinch-hitter, he's seen regular action following an injury to star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton.

Suzuki is batting .253/.310/.308 this year.
