Hurricane Helene cancellation updates: Latest news on MLB, college football and more games impacted by storm image

The hurricane season runs from the beginning of June through the end of November.

Typically, teams in the southeast are prepared for any severe weather heading their way, and their governing leagues figure out how to make it work. Whether the solution is rescheduled games or teams having to play at neutral sites, there is usually a way to get the games in.

MLB and the NCAA are diligently eyeing Hurricane Helene. The storm is taking a unique path, making its U.S. landfall in the western panhandle of Florida and continuing north through west Georgia/east Alabama. It's expected to head westward toward Tennessee and Kentucky by Friday night and Saturday morning.

Helene was upgraded to a hurricane Wednesday and made landfall as a Category 4 storm. The Sporting News will provide the latest updates for the sports and teams affected by the storm, as well as the latest tracker for Hurricane Helene.

Latest news, updates on MLB, college football and more games impacted by Hurricane Helene

This section will be updated as cancellations or rescheduling happens.

MLB

Mets vs. Braves

The remaining two games between the Mets and Braves were postponed Wednesday and will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader on Monday. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 1:10 p.m. ET.

The games will be played if necessary, but it's very likely they will be necessary with the Mets and Braves just one game apart in the wild-card chase and the head-to-head tiebreaker hanging in the balance. The presence of the Diamondbacks, separated from both teams by a half-game, only adds more importance to the series.

If the rain lingers into the weekend, it could impact Atlanta's series against the Kansas City Royals, who are in their own playoff race in the AL Wild Card.

College Football

Florida A&M

The game between Florida A&M and Alabama A&M has been postponed to Nov. 29.

Miami

The Miami Hurricanes are scheduled to play Virginia Tech at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 27. At the moment, no changes have been made to this game.

Florida State

The Florida State Seminoles bumped up their travel schedule and left early for their game against the SMU Mustangs on Saturday, Sept. 28. While they made the trip, their band did not.

University of Central Florida

The UCF Golden Knights will host the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday. Colorado flew into Orlando on Wednesday ahead of the projected inclement weather, so they are already in town preparing to play.

Appalachian State

App State's home game Saturday against Liberty has been canceled and will not be rescheduled.

MLS

Inter Miami

Inter Miami is scheduled to play Charlotte FC on Saturday night in Miami. The country the stadium is in was not included in the state of emergency, so they should be OK. No changes have been made to the scheduled kickoff time yet.

St. Louis FC

St. Louis will host Kansas City FC on Saturday night. With the projected westward turn of the storm, there could be a lot of rain falling on St. Louis. However, no changes have been made to the game yet.

NFL

The next NFL games will be on Sunday, Sept. 29. A handful of games are being played in the Southeast, but as of Friday morning, no changes are being implemented to the current schedule.
