The 2024 Major League Baseball season is winding down. We are now in the month of August, and the pennant races are the focus.
However soon, another offseason will take place, and players will become free agents. Several teams could use pitching this coming winter.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic listed a key Cleveland Guardians pitcher as a solid option for teams looking for pitching.
"Alex Cobb went a combined 15-11 with a 3.74 ERA over 46 starts in 2021 and 2022 for the Angels and Giants, the logged a 3.87 ERA over 28 starts in 2023," Bowden wrote on Monday. "At the trade deadline, the Giants dealt him to the Guardians, and he made his 2024 debut Friday after working his way back from offseason hip surgery. Provided he stays healthy, Cobb could be an undervalued free agent."
Cobb has certainly dealt with more than his fair share of injuries over the past several years, and he obviously has missed most of the 2024 season.
But if he remains healthy, he could be a solid pickup for teams in need of pitching, particularly at the back end of the starting rotation, which is the kind of starter Cobb profiles as.
The 36-year-old struggled in his season debut, allowing four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. He has bounced around between the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, Angels, Giants, and Guardians over the course of his career.
