A player must be placed on unconditional release waivers before a team can formally release that player. All 29 MLB teams then have a chance to claim the player on waivers, but he can refuse to move to that team.
If the player is picked up, the acquiring team is required to pay the remainder of his contract.
Gennett signed a one-year, $9.78 million deal with the Reds before the season and was traded to the Giants at the deadline for a player to be named later.
He batted .234 with two home runs and six RBIs in 21 games with the Giants after the deal.
His year got off to a bad start when a groin injury knocked him out for the first couple of months.
Before that, he was an All-Star in 2018 and hit a combined 50 home runs in two years in Cincinnati.
He is a free agent after the season.
If he is not picked up by another team he can enter free agency immediately.
