The San Francisco Giants are eliminated from postseason contention for the third consecutive season. They currently own a 77-79 record and sit in fourth place in the National League West.
They made a few big moves last offseason, with the most notable ones being the signings of Blake Snell and Matt Chapman.
However, those moves have not helped the Giants bounce back into contention. But this coming offseason, they might decide to spend a little more money.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today noted that this was a selling point made to Chapman prior to his extension.
"While Giants minority owner Buster Posey met privately with third baseman Matt Chapman the day before signing his six-year, $151 million contract, it had little to do with contract negotiations but everything to do about answering Chapman's questions about the future of the franchise," Nightengale wrote. "Posey assured him that the Giants plan to spend, and spend big, turning the organization around as quickly as possible."
The Giants have missed out on key free agents in each of the last two years. They fell short in the Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa sweepstakes in 2022 and failed to sign Shohei Ohtani last year.
But if the Giants spend big and make multiple big moves this coming offseason to supplement their young core, they could get themselves closer to contention.
Fans in San Francisco haven't experienced a deep playoff run since 2014, when the Giants won their third title in a five-year span. Making some splashes in free agency would ignite some hope within the fanbase.
It will be interesting to see how the Giants approach the offseason and if they'll keep their word to Chapman on spending big.
