The San Francisco Giants still have hope to capture the third and final National League Wild Card spot, sitting just 3 1/2 games back, even after losing three out of four to the Atlanta Braves.
However, in the offseason, they may ultimately lose third baseman Matt Chapman, who is expected to opt out of his contract. This will leave the Giants searching for a third baseman to replace his production.
Fortunately, there is another option that could benefit them.
"Alex Bregman is the epitome of a championship-caliber player," Jim Bowden wrote in The Athletic. "He's a tremendous teammate and wants to be at the plate with the game on the line."
By signing Blake Snell, Chapman, and Jorge Soler, the Giants proved their desire to win and get back to the postseason.
If they want to win in 2025, pursuing Bregman would be a good idea. He has great postseason experience and has won two World Series titles with the Houston Astros.
The 30-year-old is hitting .261 with 19 home runs, 59 RBI, and a .763 OPS. He finished in the top three in voting for the AL MVP Award back in 2019.
The slugger still possesses plenty of power and is capable of producing when the lights are brightest.
San Francisco will need power in their lineup if they lose Chapman, but they could easily pivot to Bregman.
We'll see how the market develops this winter and if the Giants will indeed check in on the former World Series hero.
