The San Francisco Giants finished the 2024 regular season with a record of 80-82, ultimately falling short of the postseason for the third consecutive year.
To make matters worse, they are likely to lose left-hander Blake Snell in free agency. The former Cy Young is going to opt out of his contract and hit the market again.
Instead of diving into the free agent market, the Giants could potentially look to fill this need via trade.
The St. Louis Cardinals may enter a rebuild, and the Giants could possibly target Sonny Gray to replace Snell.
In his first season with the Cardinals, Gray went 13-9 with a 3.84 ERA and helped strengthen St. Louis' rotation. But if the Cardinals are going to rebuild, the Giants could be a fit for Gray.
They already have Logan Webb at the top of their rotation, but they could use a No. 2 starter to complement him. Gray brings swing-and-miss capability to a rotation and is somebody that can be trusted in a postseason game.
This could also leave the Giants some money to pursue a star such as Juan Soto to bolster their offense. It will be interesting to see how they approach the offseason.
But Gray would be a huge addition to the team and could help them take the next step to try and contend again in 2025. The Giants also have plenty of young prospects they could give the Cardinals if they do pursue a trade for the veteran right-hander.
