The San Francisco Giants are barely hanging around in the National League Wild Card race. At 66-66, they sit five games back of the Atlanta Braves.
They were mainly sellers at the trade deadline, with one of their moves being the trade of right-hander Alex Cobb to the Cleveland Guardians. In that deal, San Francisco was set to acquire a player to be named later.
On Monday, the deal was officially completed, and they added a highly intriguing infield bat to their mix, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.
"The Giants are acquiring infielder Nate Furman from the Guardians as the player to be named later in the Alex Cobb trade, sources say," Murray tweeted. "Furman, 23, looks to be a top-of-the-lineup bat and started to add power to his game this season."
This is an intriguing pickup by the Giants. It's obviously an under-the-radar pickup, as Furman is still in the minor leagues, having spent this season with the Guardians High-A and Double-A affiliates. He is unfortunately on the 60-Day injured list.
However, while his stats this season are a small sample size, they are nothing to scoff at. He's hitting .294 with seven home runs, 32 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and an .829 OPS.
Furman was selected by the Guardians in the fourth round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft out of Charlotte. He spent last season with the Guardians Single-A and High-A affiliates and hit .263, but as Murray noted, he has added some power to his game.
We'll see if Furman can find his way into the Giants plans in the near future.
