New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole had a historic outing Tuesday night against the crosstown-rival Mets, just not in the way he would have wanted.
It was clear from the start that Cole didn't have his typical stuff in the second start since coming off the injured list due to elbow inflammation.
The Mets took advantage, teeing off for six runs against the reigning American League Cy Young winner and keeping him from entering the fifth inning of the game.
In 4.0 innings, Cole allowed seven hits and six earned runs on 72 pitches (44 strikes). He gave up four home runs and didn't record a strikeout.
Cole is the first pitcher in Yankees history to allow at least four home runs and four walks without recording a strikeout (h/t @nyyankeesstats).

It was only the second outing of Cole's career in which he didn't record a strikeout and only the second outing of his career in which he allowed at least four home runs in a single start.
The big issue was the lack of velocity. According to Katie Sharp, Cole threw nine four-seam fastballs with a velocity of 94 mph or lower. It's the most in any game since he joined the Yankees.
Not only was this blowout loss to the Mets a continuation of the lowest point of the season, but Cole did not look anything like himself.
The result was finding himself on the wrong side of Yankees history for once.
