CLEARWATER, Fla. — Philadelphia Phillies reserve infielder Freddy Galvis has been hospitalized with a staph infection and is being tested for a potentially deadly strain of the bacteria.
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says Friday that Galvis is being treated with antibiotics, both orally and through an IV. He is being checked for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a staph bacteria resistant to many antibiotics.
UPDATE: Amaro confirmed that Galvis was diagnosed with MRSA late Friday afternoon.
Amaro says Galvis would open the season on the disabled list.
The 24-year-old Galvis cut his left knee earlier this month in a Grapefruit League game. He had to have an abscess removed from the wound earlier this week and complications arose when an infection was detected.
Galvis was a favorite in camp to earn a roster spot as the Phillies top utility infielder.
