Former Red Sox All-Star 3B Frank Malzone dies at 85 image

Former Red Sox third baseman Frank Malzone died Tuesday. He was 85.

Malzone played the majority of his career with the Sox, making his debut in 1955. He remained with the team for 10 years and won three Gold Glove Awards from 1957-59. He was the first third baseman awarded a Gold Glove.

Malzone was a six-time All Star who had a career batting average of .274 with 133 home runs and 728 RBIs. His two best seasons were 1957 and 1958. The Bronx native hit .292/.323/.427 with 15 homers and 103 RBIs in 1957 and finished seventh in American League MVP voting. A year later, he hit .295/.333/.421 with 15 homers and 92 RBIs in a league-high 627 at-bats a year later. In 1963, he was named the third baseman on the Sporting New AL All-Star team.

Malzone played his final MLB season in 1966 with the California Angels.

After he retired from baseball, Malzone went on to serve as a scout for Boston for more than 30 years and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1995.
