After missing 16 games with a strained right hamstring, Dustin Pedroia rejoined the Red Sox in their first game following the All-Star break. Now, the second baseman is headed back to where he came from — the disabled list.

According to Red Sox manager John Farrell, Pedroia didn't reinjure his hamstring on a specific play. An MRI on Saturday revealed the strain in his hamstring has not yet healed.

“The play in-game obviously built back up on him to the point of the aggravation. Can’t say there was a singular event that caused what he’s feeling,” Farrell said, via the Boston Globe. “As he was going at it each and every day, the symptoms continued to persist and after the further imaging and further consultation between the medical staff, it was determined the best course of action was to put him on the DL.”

Pedroia initially strained his hamstring while rounding first base on June 24. He was missing from the Red Sox lineup in Thursday’s series finale against the Astros and Friday’s series opener against the Tigers. He will likely be sidelined for three weeks, though a time frame for his return has not yet been determined.

Pedroia, 31, is 1 for 22 in his last six games and is hitting .287 with nine homers and 34 RBIs this season. The 2008 AL MVP was batting .306 before sustaining the injury.
