Donald Trump's campaign for the presidency has been one of the most contentious in American history, so today, with the election upon us, let us stick to sports.
MORE: Sports figures who support Donald Trump
Namely, Trump's hot Twitter takes on sports. We know a lot about what The Donald has said about matters of policy, but what about sports? Quite a lot, actually.
I hear the Rickets family, who own the Chicago Cubs, are secretly spending $'s against me. They better be careful, they have a lot to hide!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 22, 2016
OK, that's still really politics. And having taken a stand against Cubs ownership in 2016, well, not the best look! Sad!
As one of Miamii's largest landowners, I am pulling for the @MiamiHEAT in the @NBA finals. Lebron's time is now! @KingJames
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2012
LeBron James has spent time actively campaigning for Hillary Clinton in the past week. Uh, how about another sport?
The Jets just don't have it. Time for a quarterback change!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 5, 2014
This was after the Jets lost 31-0 to the Chargers, a game in which they had 60 passing yards as a team using both Geno Smith and Michael Vick. The 2014 Jets were pretty horrendous all around, though, and this seems mostly about being against Vick, given previous Trump tweets.
Michael Vick of the Philadelphia @eagles is a great athlete but not a great quarterback.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 17, 2012
.@eagles should sit Michael Vick. He is a great athlete but less than average quarterback.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 2, 2012
The 2012 Eagles were, like the 2014 Jets, a garbage fire.
Surprised @Eagles signed Michael Vick yesterday to be their 2013 QB. Vick is talented but brittle & probably won't last long.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 12, 2013
This was actually true. The 2013 Eagles went to the playoffs after Nick Foles took over as quarterback. Maybe Trump had some savvy about football! Too bad he quit watching it.
I don't know what it is, but I'm getting totally bored watching NFL football. Too many penalties and far too soft! T.V. off and back to work
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 5, 2014
I'm not going to be watching much NFL football anymore. Too time consuming, too boring, too many flags and too soft. Focus on other things!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 6, 2014
The @nfl ratings continue to fall every week and will keep dropping. Boring games--too many flags--too soft!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 10, 2014
The @nfl games are so boring now that actually, I’m glad I didn’t get the Bills. Boring games, too many flags, too soft!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 13, 2014
There are just so many penalties and such long commercials in these NFL games that they are no longer worth watching. Soft hitting & boring!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 26, 2014
Again, we see a man who's on top of things, calling the NFL's ratings drop two years before it happened. But when it came time to "focus on other things," Trump wasn't just talking about his future in politics. His true sporting love, for years, has been baseball.
Really enjoyed discussing @yankees yesterday with @RealMicihaelKay. I am a long time Yankee fan.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 17, 2012
Let's take a look at Trump's takes on the game.
Mariano Rivera is greatest closer of all time. A leader in the club house & an exceptional man. One of the best @Yankees in history.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 23, 2013
There is nothing to argue about here. It's proof that no matter what your views are, Mariano Rivera is unquestionably an all-time great.
A-Rod must be dropped in the Yankees line-up tonight if they want to win. He simply can't perform without drugs.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 10, 2012
That night, A-Rod went 0 for 3. Raul Ibanez pinch-hit for him, hit a game-winning homer in the ninth inning, then the game-winning homer in the 12th. The Yankees took a 2-1 series lead on the Orioles, and went on to win the ALDS in five games.
Then, however, Trump went off the rails, tapping into a vein of the richest delusions of talk radio about the Yankees, starting with A-Rod.
.@Yankees are in trouble without Derek. Try A-Rod at short- get him some confidence.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 14, 2012
The guy you think is terrible and can't play without drugs should go to a much more difficult defensive position, which he hasn't played in nearly a decade, to get confidence? OK.
George Steinbrenner @yankees would have gotten out of A-Rod's contract three years ago...but put A-Rod in tonight.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 17, 2012
Ah, there it is, the "if George were alive" gambit, a favorite of Yankees fans and commentators who have built up The Boss as the sort of mythic and infallible figure that the Republican Party has turned Ronald Reagan into. Even when there is no evidence that the deceased leader would agree with your position, there's no way to refute it, and you're arguing a position of presumed authority!
This wasn't the only time Trump would invoke Steinbrenner, who, lest we forget, was pardoned by Reagan for his felony obstruction of justice charge stemming from illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon.
A lot of the @Yankees should be ashamed of their play in the post season. They are lucky they don't have to deal with George Steinbrenner.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 19, 2012
Druggie A-Rod, @MLB’s biggest fraud, is lucky George Steinbrenner is no longer with us. @Yankees would have voided his contract.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 17, 2013
The Yankees really have to be embarrassed losing all four games to the Mets - my great friend George Steinbrenner would be going nuts!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 31, 2013
George Steinbrenner would have done a major number on A Rod - there is no way he would have gotten paid, even with the help of the union!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 5, 2013
The Yankees are sure lucky George Steinbrenner is not around. A lot of people would be losing their jobs.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 29, 2013
You may notice that a lot of Trump's Steinbrenner-theorizing talk had to do with A-Rod. Trump really, really, really, really does not like A-Rod.
#TrumpVine @arod sucks! https://t.co/WPZlEtLaZM
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 1, 2013
A-Rod has disgraced the blessed @Yankees organization, lied to the fans & embarrassed NYC. He does not deserve to wear the pinstripes.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 5, 2013
The biggest problem with A-Rod is he is bad for the chemistry of the Yankees--- he must go.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 21, 2012
I don't think Obama will do well in the second debate--he is psyched out just like A-Rod.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 10, 2012
Staff at Trump Park Avenue disliked A-Rod--to put it "mildly" -- The staff at Trump World Tower loves Derek Jeter.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 11, 2012
A-Rod should do the Yankees a favor and never play again.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 28, 2013
We must leave "stop and frisk" for A-Rod and Anthony Weiner!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 17, 2013
I have an idea for A-Rod---buy a home at @TrumpGolfLA overlooking the Pacific--will bring you better luck.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 2, 2012
I started to get very worried about Mitt's chances when I heard that A-Rod donated to his campaign. Everything A-Rod touches turns bad.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 8, 2012
The ties of A-Rod to politics are mind-blowing, but not as much as Trump's amazing baseball analysis.
.@Yankees Kevin Youkilis is off to a terrific start. He’s less than half the price and a much better player than a drug free A-Rod.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 10, 2013
Youkilis played 20 more games as a major leaguer after that, getting 12 hits and no homers with 22 strikeouts.
Trump has not tweeted about A-Rod since his return from suspension. He has, however, still paid attention to baseball.
Matt Harvey @Mets -- Don't let the @NYDailyNews get you down---nobody reads it. Play well.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 14, 2015
Well, maybe that's not so much a baseball tweet as one about a newspaper Trump doesn't get along with. When Trump has tweeted about the Mets, it's been almost exclusively about David Wright.
David Wright of the NY Mets should have been on the 1st Team All Stars. He's having a great year.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 2, 2012
Congratulations to David Wright on signing a long term extension with the @Mets. David is an exceptional player and person.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 4, 2012
Congratulations to my friend David Wright of the @mets who is now their all-time hitting leader.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 27, 2012
Ah, "my friend," a sobriquet normally reserved for the other captain in New York.
Best of luck to my good friend Derek Jeter on his first game today back at shortstop. @Yankees Captain is a warrior & winner.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 13, 2013
My friend Derek is a special athlete and special person--there is nobody like him. @Yankees
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 26, 2014
I can’t believe my friend Derek Jeter is out for whole season--injured day he left Trump World Tower. Lucky bldg.-- Move back fast!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 16, 2013
That's not about baseball at all. It's about Trump. Let's get that real baseball talk.
In game 7 of the World Series tonight, the Giants are making a big mistake in not starting their ace against K.C., even with two days rest.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 29, 2014
I told you that the Giants starting Hudson was a mistake. Just got knocked out of the game. I love being right!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 30, 2014
Except, Trump wasn't right. When Tim Hudson left Game 7 of the 2014 World Series in the second inning, it was a 2-2 game. Jeremy Affeldt provided 2.1 innings of brilliant work out of the bullpen, and because Bruce Bochy had not started Madison Bumgarner, he still had his best pitcher available to work more important innings as the game went on. Bumgarner's Average Leverage Index in that game, according to Baseball Reference, was 2.01, higher than any other game and the highest-leverage outing of five innings or more of any pitcher ever in Game 7 of a World Series.
Had Bochy started Bumgarner on two days' rest, what might he have done in the late innings of that game? Trump may have celebrated being right, but he was as wrong as wrong could be.
Bruce Bochy for president. So what if he was born in France?
Let's take a closer look at that birth certificate. @BarackObama was described in 2003 as being "born in Kenya." http://t.co/vfqJesJL
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 18, 2012
OK, sorry, that got political. One more thing, though: What is Trump's biggest baseball cause?
All time hit leader Pete Rose should now be in the Baseball Hall Of Fame. He has paid his penalty!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 17, 2013
Why has all time hits leader Pete Rose paid a 20 year price whrn A-Rod gets 200 game penalty. It's time to let Pete into The Hall of Fame!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 6, 2013
Major League Baseball: The best thing you can do is let @PeteRose_14---your all time hits leader---into the Hall of Fame. It's time!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 10, 2013
After watching all about the horror story that is A-Rod, I realized again that it is time to let Pete Rose into the Baseball Hall of Fame!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 13, 2014
It's time to let Pete Rose, the all time hits leader, into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Enough already!!!!!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 17, 2014
Let Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame now - 35 years is enough!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 12, 2015
Glad to see that @PeteRose_14 has been hired by @FOXSports as an analyst. Pete should be around baseball and in the Hall of Fame!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 21, 2015
Let Pete Rose into the Baseball Hall of Fame. It's time, he has paid a big and very long price!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 14, 2015
Come on MLB, do the right thing! Let @PeteRose_14 into the Hall. No drugs—just hard work and talent!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 10, 2013
Just hard work and talent and breaking the cardinal rule of baseball, then voluntarily agreeing to a lifetime ban as his penalty.
