After a slow start in Game 1 of the 2020 World Series, the Rays jumped out to an early lead Wednesday and held on to win Game 2 and level the series.
Coming into the game, Brandon Lowe was 6 for 61 (.098) this postseason, but he broke out in a big way in Game 2. Lowe got things started for Tampa Bay with a solo shot in the first inning. Then, after Joey Wendle delivered a two-out, two-run double in the fourth, Lowe added a two-out, two-run homer in the fifth to give the Rays a 5-0 lead.
While the Rays' offense was sizzling early, Blake Snell was cooking on the mound. He pitched four hitless innings and got two outs in the fifth before Chris Taylor got to him with a two-out, two-run dinger to make it 5-4. Snell finished the night allowing just two hits and two earned runs while striking out nine over 4 2/3 innings.
Following the Dodgers' awakening, Ray's first baseman Ji Man Choi manufactured a crucial insurance run in the top of the sixth. He led off with a single, advanced to third on a single to left by Manuel Margot and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wendle to make it 6-2.
Still, the Dodgers didn't let up. They got one back in the bottom of the sixth on a Will Smith solo shot, then another in the eighth on a deep homer to center field by NLCS MVP Corey Seager to make it 6-4. LA had a chance to score another in the frame after Justin Turner doubled with no outs, but a Max Muncy flyout and a great snag by Wendle on a screamer from Smith allowed Aaron Loup to close out the inning by striking out Cody Bellinger.
Loup retired the first two outs of the ninth, then Castillo came in and struck out Taylor to get the save and end the game.
