Dodgers icon Fernando Valenzuela becomes U.S. citizen image

Fernando Valenzuela, one of the most popular players in Dodgers history, became a U.S. citizen Wednesday.

Valenzuela, a native of Mexico, sparked one of baseball’s biggest phenomena with “Fernandomania” in the 1980s.

In 1981, he became the first player to win Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award in the same season.

Valenzuela, 54, calls Dodgers games for Spanish-language radio broadcasts.
