Melky Cabrera has life flash before his eyes on Dillon Gee's weird 'wild' pitch

For about five seconds during the Royals-White Sox matchup Friday, not one single thing looked right.

Kansas City pitcher Dillon Gee tried to deliver a 1-0 pitch to Chicago's Melky Cabrera, when his spikes got caught on the mound and, well, everything went wrong and looked really weird. Just watch.

See? Weird and unsettling. Gee ended up facing the outfield, the ball ended up near first base and Cabrera ended up facing the backstop, defensively and instinctively holding up an arm to protect himself from a pitch that never arrived. That's not how any of this is supposed to work.

There wasn't anyone on base, so it technically wasn't a wild pitch. But it was definitely wild. The official scoring was "ball." But judging by Cabrera's "oh-no-WHAT'S-HAPPENING?!" reaction, he might lobby for a change to "near-death experience."

The at-bat only got worse for Cabrera — he ended up striking out.
