Yankees stun Rangers with 6-run ninth, capped by Didi Gregorius' walkoff HR image

The Yankees ended a three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion Wednesday night in the Bronx. They overcame a four-run deficit against the Rangers in the bottom of the ninth and won 9-7.

Rangers closer Sam Dyson entered with a 7-3 lead, seeking his 17th save of the year, but instead allowed four runs while recording just one out. Yankees catcher Brian McCann tied the game with a three-run homer, his second homer of the night. Didi Gregorius capped the six-run inning with a two-run, walkoff blast to right field.  

The six runs were the most by the Yankees in the ninth inning since May 12, 2010, at Detroit.

With the win, the Yankees (38-39) stayed 10 games behind the American League East-leading Orioles (47-30).  More importantly, they stayed 3 1/2 games back in the AL wild-card race.

Player of the day

Max Scherzer, SP, Nationals — Striking out at least 10 batters for the fifth time in his last six starts, the right-hander pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings against the Mets, allowing just two hits and one walk. He lowered his ERA to 3.30 and his WHIP to 0.96. Washington's 4-2 win over New York was the Nats' fourth in a row.

Highlight 

MLB.com's Statcast measured Anthony Rizzo's maximum running speed and the time it took him to circle the bases on his inside-the-park home run against the Reds. 

Three things to know

The Indians topped the Braves for their 12th consecutive win. During the winning streak, the Indians' rotation has compiled a 1.91 ERA and allowed just 52 hits in 89 2/3 innings.  

With a 12-6 win over the Padres, the Orioles have scored at least 11 runs in three consecutive games, tying the longest streak in franchise history (Aug. 5-7, 1996, and July 14-16, 1925, as the St. Louis Browns). Mark Trumbo connected on his major league-leading 23rd home run, giving the O's their 55th homer in June, tying an MLB record. 

White Sox slugger Todd Frazier has 22 home runs and a .202 batting average. Only one player has hit 30 or more homers while batting under .200: Mark Reynolds, with 32 homers and a .198 average in 2010.

Rangers (51-28) at Yankees (38-39), 1:05 p.m. ET: Looking to avenge their late-inning loss, the will Rangers send A.J. Griffin (3-0, 3.08 ERA) to the hill against Michael Pineda (3-7, 5.51 ERA), who has been pitching decently of late (a 3.12 ERA and 25:3 K:BB ratio over his past three starts).

Cubs (51-26) at Mets (40-37), 7:10 p.m. ET: After completing a three-game sweep of the Reds, Chicago heads to New York for its first meeting this year with the team that swept it in the 2015 NLCS. John Lackey (7-4, 3.29 ERA) takes the hill for the Cubs, while Steven Matz (7-3, 3.29 ERA) will toe the rubber amid concerns about a bone spur in his pitching elbow.
