The 2023 World Series looks like a battle of two opposing styles prevalent in modern baseball: power vs. speed.
The Rangers have slugged their way past teams all season. Texas had four players with more than 20 home runs during the regular season, including two with at least 33 long balls. It ranked fourth in the majors in home runs (233) and third in slugging (.452). The feared bats have led to high walk totals (third with 599) and on-base percentages (third with .337).
WORLD SERIES LIVE: Follow Diamondbacks vs. Rangers updates from Game 1
Power and on-base percentage have been in vogue for some time, but the Diamondbacks have embraced the rule changes that emphasize speed. Arizona ranks second in stolen bases (166) and was the only team in the top five caught fewer than 36 times, with only 26 runners caught stealing. It also led the majors with 44 triples. When it comes to power, the Diamondbacks rank 22nd in home runs (166) and 17th in slugging percentage (.408).
These two styles have led each of these underdog teams to the World Series, with Texas looking for its first-ever title and the Diamondbacks hoping to win the Commissioner's Trophy for the second time in their 25-year history. Both are exciting ways of playing the game, and should lead to a fun World Series matchup.
