After the Diamondbacks' high-spending offseason failed to produce a contender, the club on Monday fired manager Chip Hale and general manager Dave Stewart.

The D-backs were predicted to battle for the NL West crown this season after acquiring ace Zack Greinke, pitcher Shelby Miller, reliever Tyler Clippard and shortstop Jean Segura over the winter, but finished the season at 69-93, good for fourth in the NL West as their attendance dropped to the lowest lowest in franchise history.

“We are very grateful to Dave and Chip who are widely respected throughout the game of baseball,” Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick said in a statement. "Ultimately. the results have not been what we had hoped and while that responsibility is shared by all of us, we have decided that a change is necessary."

The Diamondbacks went 148-176 the past two years with Hale and Stewart.

Hale had been on the hot seat since July, when rumors swirled that he would be replaced by Triple-A Reno manager Phil Nevin.

Arizona might not be finished revamping the front office.

Kendrick added that the fate of chief baseball officer Tony La Russa is still under review.
